James N. Lampe, M.S.W., Ph.D.

James N. Lampe, M.S.W., Ph.D., began his clinical career in mental health in 1980 as an Inpatient Psychiatric Social Service Worker in Des Moines Iowa and completed his Masters in Social Work at University of Iowa in 1986 prior to moving to Chicago. In Chicago, he worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings and as Social Service manager with a Home Care company providing care to AIDS and HIV patients during the AIDS epidemic years before working full-time in private practice. Dr. Lampe remains in full-time private practice and has added experience as an online instructor teaching Introduction to Self Psychology and Advanced readings in Self Psychology with the Si Chuan He Guang Clinical Psychology Institute in China. Dr. Lampe has been an instructor for several courses at ICSW, including Qualitative Research, Introduction to Theory, Advanced Self Psychology, and the Self Psychology theory class. His committee memberships have included the Professional Enrichment Committee and ICSW Progression committee.

Areas of Interest and Approaches to Practice: 

Dr’s Lampe’s areas of clinical expertise include adults, individuals, and couples, treating anxiety, depression and PTSD, along with addressing GLBT issues. He utilizes a self psychology perspective along with aspects of attachment theory and modern psychoanalytic perspectives in his practice.
